Opera New Version Fixes Five Security Vulnerabilities

Recently, Opera released the new version of web browser. Opera 11.01 comes with additional features and mitigates five vulnerabilities including a recently disclosed critical vulnerability. The critical vulnerability was caused by integer truncation error and allowed remote attackers to execute malicious code. The new version also mitigates vulnerabilities, which allowed clickjacking attacks, allowed high privileges to remote web pages and allowed access to email accounts even after deleting private data. A vulnerability in browser configuration allowed attackers to bypass restrictions and initiate clickjacking attacks. The high risk vulnerability allowed attackers to manipulate users to click on a seemingly legitimate but fake links to gain control of their computers or gain unauthorized access to privileged information.

The latest version also mitigates another high risk vulnerability, which caused the browser to erroneously provide escalated privileges to remote web pages. The vulnerability allowed attackers to gain unauthorized privileges and upload files from the affected systems as web resources and extract confidential information.

Opera 11.01 mitigates fixes a moderate vulnerability associated with the 'delete private data' tool of the browser. The clear all email account passwords option under the tool does not clear all the data immediately and allows access to an e-mail account until the browser is restarted. Usually, professionals who have undergone certified ethical hacker training help developers to identify security flaws in products and applications. In this case, the vulnerabilities were identified by various security researchers.

Unpatched web browsers are vulnerable to security breaches. Users must apply appropriate security patches to web browsers and associated plug-in to reduce instances of attacks and security breaches. Opera 10 Alpha Preview - Unfinished Porshe

Being the underdog of the Internet browser war, Opera still haven't given up it's effort of becoming top 2 or maybe top 3 browser. For you info, IE currently dominates the browser market, occupying 70% of the browser market while Mozilla Firefox occupies 20%, Safari 6% and Opera 0.8%. That 0.8% is really really low. Even Google Chrome beat it by 0.1% since it's release a few months ago.

I have been using Opera since version 8, thanks to the recommendation of a friend. This version 10, codenamed Peregrine, retains the same visual interface as the version 9.5 Opera and up.

That visual not really bad, nor it is attractive. I just feels that that big black bar is taking too much space for tabs. I know the appearance can be changed, but still, why do Opera want that bar to become so BIG?

The Opera 10 boasts about it's ability so scored 100/100 in acid3 test. But, in my case, I only get 98/100. No matter how many times I refreshed, it still remain 98. Perhaps my download got a bit corrupted?

Since it's only an alpha version, I expected it to run into many problems, such as missing objects in browser or crash unexpectedly. Here, I must say that I'm pretty impressed with this alpha version, as it display correctly on websites that I frequently surf, expect for 1. It's the Blogger 'Create Post' section. It won't display all of the options such as font type, font size, alignment and etc. When I'm typing this post, I don't even know whether I'm in "Edit Html" or "Compose" mode.

* Mouse gestures-these shortcuts can be performed with your mouse to open links in new pages, go back, forward, or close windows with presets clicks and movements of your mouse.

* Image loading options-simply click a small button at the bottom of the window to switch from loading all images or only cached images to help with page loading. Or, if you prefer a more secure and even faster load time, images can be turned off completely. Also, right click on images that have been hidden or compressed, and you'll have the option of reloading that image normally.

Give Opera 10 A Chance

There are a bunch of really great browsers out there. Although I personally use Google Chrome as my default browser, I think that Opera 10 is one of the browsers worth trying out ultimately. You might find yourself making it your default browser. As a chrome user myself I don't feel all that alien to Opera 10 because some of its features are pretty similar. Chrome users might find the transition between browsers easy. The first similarity that you'll find is the speed dial page. It should look like Chrome's thumbnail page except that it doesn't show the recently and frequently visited web pages.

Speed dial is actually a more appropriate term for it because it works like a phone's speed dial. There are nine boxes that you can set to link directly to your favorite site. All you have to do is click on a box that isn't assigned to link to a website yet and then type in the site that you want to set it to. If you've already been visiting sites on the browser, it will automatically sites that you've been frequenting and then you can click on the one you want to assign the link to. One of my favorite features on Opera's speed dial is that you can set it up just like you desktop.

You have a choice in how you want to arrange the dial pad. It might be limited, but at least you have the freedom to move it around. If you're a minimalist freak like me, you might throw a fit because the boxes can't be moved from the center of the screen to make the background of the page visible. This leads me to my other favorite fact about it, the speed dial page can be set to have a background, which may not exactly be great for some, but it's one of the things that attract me to it.

Pretty soon, background images will be drawn up just to make that page look likable. It kinda works like Stylish works for the Mozzila Firefox. Speaking of Firefox, this reminds me of how much lighter Opera 10 is compared to Firefox. While Firefox eats up memory at 180mb, Opera follows with a measly 100mb of memory usage. However, both of them are trumped by Google Chrome, which leads by eating up just 15mb of your computer's memory. So whether you're editing photos, playing a game or running some other application that needs a lot of memory, it's better if you leave your Opera browser running in the background rather than Firefox.

I like the tab features on Opera 10 because hovering your cursor over the tab will show you a thumbnail of the image of the page. This makes it easier since you don't need to move from your current tab and try to look at the page that you can't remember. Despite that little convenience, I just don't see how useful that is. It looks pretty, but that's all there is to it. Turbo mode is also one of the better features on the new Opera browser, but I just can't seem to see the big difference in loading speed.

Testing Your Website For the Different Browsers

While writing and designing your website you need to keep in mind the various web browsers which one can find out there. Simply because you use, say, Internet Explorer version 7 that does not mean that your visitors will also be using IE7. Countless web users are still using Internet Explorer 6 (still roughly 26% at the point in time I am writing this).

Actually, the top 10 browsers by market share (according to Net Applications) are:

IE6 - 26.2%
Firefox - 23.7%
IE7 - 19.9%
IE8 - 19.9%
Safari - 4.2%
Chrome -3.2%
Opera - 2.4%
Netscape -.3%
Mozilla -.1%
Konqueror and
IE5 -.04%

Okay, I know the percentages do not add up to 100%, but that is due to rounding. It is still close enough to give you an idea.

As you can see you are going to need to test your site on a number of different browsers to make sure that at least the majority of visitors can see what you have to offer. What is the point of limiting your market to just IE7 (just because that is what you use). You could potentially be restricting your market to 20% of internet users, which is just not enough.

One option is to install multiple browsers on your computer, this will work for some of the but not others. For example, I believe that you can only install Internet Explorer once on each windows machine. If you have more than one Windows machine around (like say a laptop or netbook) then you can have each one with a different version.

One other problem is testing Mac browsers on a Windows machine and vice versa. There are online solutions to that issue and I will go into them later.

As for the other browsers, it is easy to install each one on your computer, just do a web search to find out where to download each one and install it. You may decide to skip the last few on the list as they account for such a tiny amount of internet users, I will leave that decision up to you.

Now when you update or write a new page for your website, or when you are starting with a new design, check how it looks and handles on each of the different browsers you have installed. Watch for anything that just doesn't look right. One of the biggest problems is with your CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) especially with IE8.

Fixing all the bugs you find during your test will save you a lot of frustration in the future. Doing this test before you have 100's of pages online which only work in IE7 will save you so much time in later repairs.

The widget could work as follows:-

Opera browser's Speed Dial feature gets new 'extensions' with live updates

Opera's eponymously-named desktop Web browser was updated Tuesday with a few new features more popular rivals might take notice of -- in particular its Speed Dial extensions.

Opening the Norwegian company's latest browser release, Opera 11.50, takes users to a landing page with thumbnails of websites a user visits frequently, which Opera calls Speed Dial. But Speed Dial is nothing new. Opera's had this feature for a bit, and Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer 9 each offer similar options.

Opera 11.50's Speed Dial extensions work like desktop widgets and other Web apps. Speed Dial extensions fill a thumbnail with live, updated information instead of a simple thumbnail to a website.

The approach is similar to Microsoft Windows Phone 7's live tiles, which provide active data rather than a static icon.

Opera has 662 Speed Dial extensions available for download in its extension catalog. More extensions that take advantage of the ability to have live animations and data feeds are on the way from developers worldwide, said Thomas Ford, an Opera spokesman.

Among the current options are RSS newsfeeds, weather updates, live-updating email extensions and others that display photo collections in a Speed Dial box.

The updated browser also has a slight redesign for a cleaner, less cluttered look of buttons. It also has the addition of Opera Link, which remembers and syncs Speed Dial extensions, bookmarks, user names and passwords across any Opera browser a user logs into, on any device -- for example, across a home laptop, a work PC, a tablet and even a smartphone.

Opera has unveiled the new Opera Mini 6 for the iPhone and iPad on Tuesday and is now available at the Apple App Store for free download.

Opera claims that the new browser will have “faster and smoother” zoom and pan and will have buttons for automatic sharing via Facebook and Twitter, reports the Register. The way the Opera browser works is that it uses Opera proxy servers that compress data before sending it to client for much faster download times. The new Opera Mini 6 claims over 90 percent of data compression which would make for a much faster browsing experience.

A hands-on report by Cnet finds that the new Opera Mini 6 has new features that make for easy navigation, including a way to manage search engines and web browsers. Opera’s Speed Dial also provides quick access to favorite sites through a convenient 3X3 layout.

The Opera browser was launched in April 2010 and has since become the most popular mobile browser in the world with 21.9 percent of the market, and 105 million monthly users, most of which are Apple iOS users, reports the LA Times. While the iPhone and the iPad come equipped with the Safari browser, users have the option of downloading the Opera browser at the App Store.

“Every platform is important to us, but the iPhone is hugely important to Opera, especially in the U.S.,” said Opera product manager, Phillip Gronvold “But Safari is rock solid, iOS is rock solid and we have no problem saying that. And so, from Opera Mini 5 to Opera Mini 6, we’ve made a big shift in what we’re trying to do.”

Also, Opera is simply different. People who do not need many bells and whistles and don't use the Internet very often may not see the need for another browser or all of it's features. Handy helpful shortcuts may simply be a confusing hassle to someone who is not accustomed to new features, like mouse gestures (allows you to move forward, back, open new tabs, etc., by clicking and moving the mouse).

The Norwegian publisher has announced the launch of a set of Web Services, Operations Unit, to share, from PC to PC, files (images, documents, music) between users. Other services will follow.

Opera has not made the choice to lock its application only to users of its browser. Indeed, access to Operation Unit is independent of the software. The platform is open and allows any developer to design their own services, not only in the area of file sharing.

In addition, unlike other systems of sharing, it does not need to have storage space online. With Unite, Opera hopes to initiate the creation of new social networks that will be controlled by users themselves and not by others, as is the case with MySpace or Flickr.

It is a new feather in Opera's cap.Norway's Opera Software is the most used and popular mobile browser in the world now.Web analytics firm StatCounter released this statment on Tuesday.

According to StatCounter, the total number of all Internet pages that were downloaded to mobile devices globally in May, 24.6 percent were downloaded through Opera's browser and 22.3 percent via iPhone. The top spot has see-sawed this year.

"Opera began the year in the number one slot but iPhone overtook it in February,"

Aodhan Cullen, chief executive of StatCounter, said in a statement.

"It will be fascinating to watch how this battle plays out over the year."

Opera sells its browser to many cellphone makers and operators.Consumers can directly download it for free, while the Apple browser's ranking reflects only iPhone users surfing the Internet. Nokia , the world's top cellphone maker, retained third place in mobile browsers with 17.9 percent of the market, StatCounter said. StatCounter said its research data is based on four billion pages loaded per month.

Opera , Mozilla and Google have protested Microsoft's dominance in the browser market to the European authorities. Microsoft has run afoul of U.S. and European antitrust regulators for bundling its browser with its operating system, which competitors say is an attempt to drive them out of the market. In January, European regulators brought formal charges against Microsoft for abusing its dominant market position by bundling its Internet Explorer Web browser with its Windows operating system, which is used in 95 percent of the world's personal computers. No longer is a beta, Google’s Chrome Web browser a capable contender to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

However, the search company's browser not have some basic features found in IE, Firefox and Opera, and limits users who want to characterize settings and customize their browser. In spite of its shortcomings, browser users should give Google Chrome a try.

Just a few short months ago, Google surprised the Web world with the make public of the beta of Google Chrome, a new Web browser direct from the search massive itself.
So what does the launch of Google Chrome 1.0 mean for the Web browsing world and the Web in general? Well, the simple fact that it is from Google has a major impact, and should put the browser in a good place to fight with Microsoft and Mozilla for market share.

But what about the browser itself? From a severe usability standpoint, Google Chrome is one of the most attractive and instinctive browsers I have ever used, and is probably the most impressive first version of a browser ever. Once a user gets over some of the foibles and differences from other browser interfaces (such as tabs at the very top of the window and no file menus), Google Chrome quickly begins to feel like the right way to surf the Web.

Microsoft preps to push IE 8; makes blocking tool available

As it has done with previous Internet Explorer (IE) releases, Microsoft has made available an IE 8 blocking toolkit to allow users to keep Microsoft’s browser from being downloaded automatically on their Windows machines.

In a January 6 posting to the Microsoft IE blog, company officials noted that Microsoft is planning to push the final IE 8 release via its Automatic Update (AU), Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update (MU) update systems. To keep the release from being pushed, customers can download the blocker toolkit from the Microsoft Download Center.

Unlike some previous versions of the toolkit, there is no expiration date on the latest blocker. The toolkit can be configured by running the registry file on client machines or via Group Policy, according to the IE 8 blog posting.

Once the final IE 8 bits are ready, Microsoft is planning to mark them as a top priority for distribution, officials said via the blog entry:
“The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the update will be listed as High Priority. Delivery of IE8 via AU will begin after we make IE8 available from the Microsoft Download Center. Of course, users can always decline to install IE8 through AU when it is offered.”

Microsoft hasn’t provided a final release target date for IE 8, other than to say some time in 2009. Late last year, company officials acknowledged Microsoft would not be releasing the final version of IE 8 before the end of calendar 2008, as some company officials had claimed previously. Instead, Microsoft is planning to distribute in the first quarter of 2009 one more public test release, Release Candidate 1, before it rolls out the final IE 8.

I’m not sure if we’ll see RC 1 of IE 8 this week. While Microsoft is expected to release the official version of Windows 7 Beta 1 to private and public testers over course of the next three days, the build of IE8 that is part of Windows 7 Beta 1 is still Beta 2, company officials said on January 7. (The refreshed partner test build of IE 8 that Microsoft released privately in December was designated as “RC1″ but isn’t the official RC1 release, the Softies have said.)
When I asked earlier this week, Microsoft officials wouldn’t comment on when IE 8 RC1 would go live.

If your Pocket PC does not already have a working Internet connection, you will need to configure one to run Opera. This is the connection Opera will use when you launch the browser.

Firstly, create a GPRS Connection

From the home screen, select Start > Settings > Connections > Connections.

Select Add a new modem connection.

Enter a name for the connection and select "Cellular line (GPRS)" as the modem type.

Select Next and under Access point name, enter the access point information provided by your mobile operator.

Select Next and enter any other information provided by your mobile operator (tap "Advanced" for more options).

Select Finish to create the connection.

Go back to Connections and use Manage existing connections to make sure the connection you just configured is set as default.

Your cache folder can thus contain sensitive information. If you do not want other users to know about certain sites that you have visited, your history may point them to these sites, and your cache may contain local copies of the content of those sites.
If you do not want Opera to store your history, go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > History and set the number of both typed-in and visited addresses to be stored, to 0. You may also set the cache to "Empty on exit", which means that it will be cleared when Opera is closed.
Cookies
Note that cookies are often used to simplify logins, remember personal information in Web forums and so forth. Such cookies should not be passed on to the next user. The easiest means of avoiding this, is to clear all cookies before closing Opera. This, too, can be automated. Go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Cookies and opt to clear all new cookies on exit.

Shared Computer

First of all, when installing Opera on a multi-user Windows computer, make sure to opt for separate user directories during install. Network and Proxies

The network settings that may affect your security and privacy mainly have to do with proxy servers. A proxy server collects information from the Internet and stores it locally, making the information available for viewing by anyone using proxy server. Proxy Server Settings

HTTP and HTTPS

Do not use a proxy server for HTTP or HTTPS unless you have particular reasons to do so. Opera is more than suited to handle these protocols. HTTPS is the secure version of the hypertext transfer protocol, and Opera can handle the highest levels of Internet security available. If you use a proxy server to handle HTTPS content, you are reducing your computer's level of security to that of the weakest application, which could be your proxy server.

Most HTTPS proxies simply pass on data and do not save or interpret the information that passes through them. This is because the information is encrypted. In special cases, it is possible for a proxy server to decrypt the information and act as a man in the middle. In such cases, Opera will display a warning unless you have already accepted and installed a certificate for the proxy in question.

Other settings

Advanced users may want to use a proxy server for most sites, but exclude some. This option is available and is activated by selecting "Do not use proxy on the addresses below". If you want to access certain sites directly, Opera will not use a proxy server for the Internet addresses you specify.

If you leave the authentication type for your login as "Auto", Opera will try the most secure authentication available and then work its way down the list should the first type fail. The authentication types available to you will depend on the mail server. Note that this will not encrypt your actual mail data, only your login.
Adding certificates in Opera
Reputable on-line merchants have their public keys signed by authorities, which are trusted security firms. These firms issue digital certificates that contain the public key, signed in a way that can be automatically proven. To display your current list of authorities, click "Manage certificates". Opera, like all secure browsers, comes with a set of certificates. Most of the time, certificates are fully valid, and if there is something questionable about a certificate, a warning dialog will be displayed. You may choose to proceed, but full security cannot be guaranteed at this point. Warnings may say:
Server certificate expired. Certificates have expiry dates, and they must be renewed on a regular basis by the people maintaining the site. Accepting an expired certificate does not necessarily reduce security, but consider the site you are visiting and how long it has been since the certificate expired, before accepting.
Wrong certificate name. A certificate is issued by an authority for a single site to use, and sites cannot borrow certificates from each other, as this invalidates the whole concept of certificates. Accepting a certificate belonging to another site is not recommended.
Certificate signer not found. If the signer of a certificate is not found in your list of authorities, only accept the certificate if you are absolutely confident that whoever is running the site in question, can be trusted.
Some certificates are self-signed, which means that they are signed by the Web site owners themselves, and not an authority outside the organization. If you know that the signer can be trusted, and you want all sites using this signer to be considered as safe, install the certificate to add the signer to your list of authorities. Trusting self-signed certificates from for example your employer can be considered as safe.
It is unlikely that you will need to upgrade Opera's existing certificates, as most of them will not expire for a decade or more. The necessary updates are taken care of with each new release of the Opera browser.

When you send or receive information from a site where Opera's icon displays "Secure", Opera and the Web site use a secret one-time key before sending the information. When you entered the secure page, Opera and the Web site used public keys to agree on that secret key. That is called a handshake. The key encrypts all the information sent and is used for this session only.
The level of encryption depends on the available key space, which means the number of possibilities when generating keys. The more possible keys, the higher the security. For session keys, the most powerful form of encryption available in browsers today is 256-bit encryption. Although Opera supports as much as 3072-bit encryption when generating key pairs (a public key and a private key), some secure sites may not support this level of encryption. Opera's default setting of 1024-bit encryption should work with most secure sites.
The number on the padlock icon signals the level of encryption. Three dots means that the Web site has a high level of security. When rating the security level of a secure document, Opera takes into consideration the following:
Everything loaded with the page, including images, frames, and redirects
Insecure images will automatically result in a level one rating
Other insecure content (such as scripting) will result in level zero
The size of the symmetric key
The server's public key size
Only documents using the most secure methods, 3-DES or 128-bit C4 and public keys larger than approximately 900 bits, get a level three rating.

Encryption is a way of scrambling information so that only a legitimate recipient of that information can make it readable again. The most common form of encryption today is public key/private key encryption. Imagine a strongbox that has two keyholes and two separate keys. If you lock the box using one key, you can only unlock it with the other.
Security protocols
Hovering the padlock icon when visiting a secure server, you will see a string of text that looks something like this: TLS v1.0 128 bit C4 (1024 bit RSA/SHA)
The first three letters will show what security protocol is used on the site. There are four common security protocols; in order from good to best, these are SSL version 2, SSL version 3, TLS 1.0, and TLS 1.1.
SSL
SSL stands for "secure sockets layer". SSL version 3 is better than version 2, which is being phased out and is only used by a small number of Web sites these days.
TLS
TLS is short for "transport layer security", a security protocol based on SSL. This is considered the most secure protocol in common use today.

Opera is designed with the most advanced and widespread security measures available, making on-line purchasing simple.
Some sites may greet you with a page saying something along the lines of "You do not have a secure browser; please download Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer." The site designer may, mistakenly, believe that only those browsers support advanced security, although Opera has levels of security that are as good as or superior to these browsers.
Changing how Opera identifies itself will often allow you to circumvent this problem: press F12 to display the Quick Preferences dialog box, then use Edit site preferences > Network, and select to "Identify as" Mozilla or Internet Explorer. When you have selected one of these alternatives, go back to the page you were attempting to enter.
Before you enter any information about yourself, especially credit card details, look for the security bar that should appear on the address bar. On the security bar, there should be an icon that looks like a locked padlock. If you hover your mouse over the icon, you will see what kind of encryption the site uses. The organizational name of the security certificate holder should appear beside the padlock icon.
Some Web sites will open a separate window with the address bar hidden. In this case, Opera will display the security bar as a collapsed address bar that shows the domain that the window belongs to. Before you enter any sensitive information, check that the domain matches the domain that you were expecting. You can also click the collapsed address bar to show the full address bar, and security bar.
Opera supports internationalized domain names (IDN), which allows domain names in languages such as Russian and Chinese to be written in their own native scripts. Opera will only allow certain combinations of scripts to be displayed in localized characters, unless the top level domain is trusted. Trusted top level domains are selected if they have established strict policies on the domain names they allow to be registered.

Plug-ins
Plug-ins are external applications that Opera can use to display images and video clips, show files, or play sounds that the browser is not able to handle by itself. Some of the most popular plug-ins are Macromedia Flash, QuickTime, and Adobe Acrobat.
Plug-ins are essentially separate applications. Therefore, Opera's various security settings will have no effect on how plug-ins work. It's a good idea to do your homework before installing new plug-ins. For example, a plug-in like RealPlayer can make use of cookies, and Opera's cookie settings will have no effect on these.
To see a list of installed plug-ins, open the built-in plug-in overview. Note that Opera for Linux has a separate preference window for installing and locating plug-ins.
Please keep in mind that any plug-in you add is an application installed on your computer. As always, protect your computer and download software only from reputable sources.
JavaScript
JavaScript (or actually ECMAScript) is a means of embedding executable content in Web pages. It is used for everything from making image links change when your mouse hovers over them, to receiving and sending cookies.
These scripts are completely safe most of the time, but they have been used for malicious purposes. JavaScript should not be able to access applications and information outside the Web page it resides on, but if you still fear JavaScript abuse, you can choose to disable it. You can also put some limits on what Opera should let the script do, e.g., resize or move windows, by clicking "JavaScript options". And you can choose to have the JavaScript console displayed should there be an error.
If you completely disable JavaScript, however, some sites may report errors, fail to display vital content such as menus or even shut you out. Remember that JavaScript is easily toggled on and off by way of Opera's "Quick preferences", that is displayed by pressing F12.
Java
Java is considered to be very secure today. If Java is installed and enabled in Opera, your system is unlikely to face security problems relating to Java. However, if you are still concerned that Java might be a security risk, disable it here. Enabling Java is also a Quick preferences option.

Opera handles a large number of varying file types, including HTML files, graphical files such as JPEG and GIF, and other types of files which it cannot use by itself. These include PDF documents, word-processor documents which can end in SXW, RTF, DOC, or any of a dozen other extensions. For certain file types, Opera needs multimedia plug-ins.

Configuring settings
By default, Opera will determine how to handle a file by its MIME type. MIME types are descriptions used by Web servers to identify files to browsers. This is the most secure way of receiving content on the Internet. There is a second option, however; you may choose to let Opera determine use the file's extension to decide which action to take when the MIME type is not reliable. This option is less secure than the default.

Some MIME types are intended as generic types, such as "text/plain" and "application/octet-stream". If a server is not specifically set up to handle a certain kind of content, these generic MIME types are often used. This means that sometimes a video file in an MPEG format will be sent using the "text/plain"MIME type. If you have chosen to determine action by file extension, Opera will nevertheless recognize the video file's extension (such as ".mpg"), and handle it according to your settings for .mpg files.

However, sometimes the file type indicated by the extension is not the file type that the browser interprets. This is due to an HTTP header called "content-disposition," which can assign a new name to the file you are downloading. Therefore, if you enable the option to determine file type by extension, pay close attention to the file name in "Open" and "Save" dialog boxes and make certain the file is not of a different kind than expected. If it is, do not open or run the file.

If you are using Opera's e-mail client, the only way you can receive a virus by e-mail, is as an attachment that you open.

Style Sheets

You can change how Opera displays Web pages by changing "Author mode" to "User mode" in the View > Style menu, or using the button on the view toolbar.

Author mode, which is default, lets you see Web pages as the author intended, while user mode lets you view pages in your own style. Each mode contains a set of preferences. Switch between the two sets by clicking the image button on the view toolbar and selecting from the drop-down list. Usually you will change settings for your own mode (user mode), but you can also change the settings in author mode. You can choose what is applied for these modes using View > Style > Manage modes.

Tip: Press Shift+G to toggle between "Author mode" and "User mode".

Skins

You can apply a skin to Opera to entirely change the way Opera look. Skins change the colors, buttons, icons, back- and foreground images etc. It is extremely easy to get and install skins for Opera. Use Tools > Appearence > Skin, and then "Find more skins", and you will be taken to the My Opera Community skin section. There you will find many different skins, all made by people from our user community.

When you have found a skin you like, click on "Download this skin"; Opera will then download it directly for you, and apply it once it is downloaded. You can then decide whether you want to keep it or not. If you want to change between skins you have downloaded, or change back to the default Opera skin, switch back to "Show installed skins" and make your choice.

Opera has always been known for its configurability. You can change both how it behaves and how it looks.

This is where you can set how Opera works. You can access the preferences in Opera by pressing Alt+P or by going to Tools > Preferences.

A selection of the most used preference settings is gathered in the Quick Preferences for instant access. Press F12 or go to Tools > Quick preferences and have a look.

Not all pages are the same. Sometimes, you may want to apply one preference to most sites, but selectively apply a different preference to a few specific sites. For example, you may want to disable unrequested pop-ups by default, but you may use some sites that rely on being able to use unrequested pop-ups.

Opera allows you to set several preferences for individual sites using site preferences. While visiting the site, right click on the page (or press F12) and select Edit site preferences.

Once a preference has been set in site preferences, all preferences in that section will be used instead of the global preferences. To manage or remove site preferences, use Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content > Manage site preferences.

For further information about Opera's preferences, press F1 and access the built-in help files.

More advanced preference management

The preferences dialogs provide access to most commonly used preferences. If you need more control over preferences, you can use the inbuilt preference editor. This is available using by typing the following address into the address bar, and pressing Enter; opera:config

To find out which files Opera uses for bookmarks, cache, mail, settings etc, simply go to Help > About Opera. The locations (paths) of these files are shown there.

All the preference settings are saved in a file called "Opera6.ini", which is located either in your main Opera folder (where you installed Opera) or in C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Application Data\Opera folder if you installed Opera with the "Use separate settings for each user" option checked. Although you can open "Opera6.ini" with any text editor, and make your desired modifications (while Opera is not running), it is easier to use the inbuilt editor.

Personal bar

The Personal bar is a toolbar that can consist of bookmarks, folders with bookmarks, or your favourite search engines, for instant access. You can configure all this yourself simply by dragging and dropping from the panels. Links can also be dragged from the address field and from within documents. Choose a bookmark folder for display in the personal bar by right-clicking it in the panel. Choose which searches to include on the personal bar by right-clicking it and viewing the options available.

This toolbar is disabled by default. Should you choose to customize and use it, you can enable it using View > Toolbars > Personal bar.

Tab bar

The tab bar acts like a taskbar; if you have several documents open at once, you can select the document you wish to view by clicking a tab on the tab bar.

The tab bar also contains the trash icon that allows you to reopen blocked pop-ups and closed tabs.

Tip: You can close tabs by holding down Shift while clicking on the page bar tabs. Right-click the tab to see a context menu with more options.

Panels

Bookmarks and history, windows sessions, chat sessions and e-mail messages are some of the items that can be managed using the panels.

Navigation Bar

Some sites provide links for a navigation bar to make site navigation easier. If you have set the Navigation bar to "Show only when needed" in View > Toolbars > Customize, it will appear directly below the Address bar whenever you go to a Web page that has support for it. This toolbar is disabled by default.

The Opera help files are made for use with the navigation bar. Press F1 to get a demonstration and find further information about Opera's user interface.

Main menu

The main menu in Opera is made to be quite typical for the various operating systems; you will find that many of the options available in the menu are familiar. Be sure to keep in mind that the Tools menu is the main place to go to manage saved items and change Opera settings. Several extra menus appear when features are enabled, such as the Feeds menu, that only appears after at least one newsfeed has been added.

Main bar

The main bar is now disabled by default. This bar contains the basic buttons used to open files, save or print Web pages, and manage windows within the MDI.

Address bar

The address bar contains the basic buttons used to navigate within a document. Additionally, it contains the address field that allows you to enter a page address to navigate to, the search field for quick searching on the Web, and a button to toggle the view bar.

The address field also has some extra features. Clicking on the address field causes the start bar to appear, which offers home, top 10 visited sites, bookmarks, and search features. If the page contains any linked newsfeeds, a button will appear in the address field that allows you to quickly add the feed. If the page uses a secure connection, the security information field will appear that gives information about the security level the page is using.

View bar

The view bar can be shown by clicking the toggle button on the address bar. As well as inline search, it offers quick access to features that affect the display of the page, such as images, stylesheets, zoom, and fit to window width. If voice is available, the voice button on the view bar can be used to tell Opera to listen to a spoken command.

Tabbed browsing and Multiple Document Interface (

Opera offers several ways to manage your browser window. As well as offering the traditional single page, single window interface, Opera also offers many useful alternatives, allowing you to manage your browser window the way that suits you.

You can have several Web pages open at the same time within a single Opera window. This is called tabbed browsing, and is the default setup that Opera offers. When several Web pages are open at the same time in Opera, these will be organized using tabs on the tab bar. There are several benefits to this, such as speed, easy access, low memory usage, and a less cluttered task bar. Click a tab to bring the page into view, or use the standard Windows function by pressing Ctrl+Tab. You can also drag tabs on the tab bar to reorganise them, and middle-click to close them. Right click on a tab to see more options.

You can configure how you want Opera's tabs to behave, using Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Tabs. The tab options allow you to tell Opera if you want it to use tabs, or you could even make it behave as a Multiple Document Interface (MDI).

True MDI is more than browsing with tabs. In Opera, you can resize pages and tile them next to each other on the same workspace to compare or work with several pages. For instance, you can have a chat page open and running next to a page for browsing or composing an e-mail message. To make the most of this feature, use Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Browsing > Show window menu to show the window menu. This allows you to manage the pages in the MDI.

If you want to have new pages open in an entirely new application window instead, like some other browsers do, go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Tabs and enable "Open windows instead of tabs"

Chatting in private – Chatting In Opera - II

If you would like to say something for only one user to hear, start a private conversation. This is most easily done by clicking on the user's nickname in the list - or in the "Chat" panel.

You can also type "/msg nickname" in the chat page input field. If you know the nickname of a person that is neither in your contacts, nor in the same chat room as you, this is particularly useful.

The private conversation will be displayed in a separate page. Go to your account's properties and the "Outgoing" tab if you would like private conversation pages to pop up in front of the other pages to grab your attention, rather than open in the background.

Sending files to other users

Opera allows you to send files to other users on a chat network. The easiest way to send files is to right click on the user's nickname in the list, and selecting "Send file", or by clicking the "Send file" button in a private chat window.

Operators

A chat room's operators, commonly known simply as "ops", have extended permissions. "Control" in the right-clickmenu for nicknames in the user list is a sub-menu available only to operators.

Ops may kick other users from the chat room, select who gets to speak if the chat room is moderated that way (quite uncommon), and grant operator privileges to other users.

Which operations require operator privileges may vary from chat room to chat room. For instance, some rooms may let all users change the topic, whereas others require you to be a room operator. Click the "Properties" button on the chat page toolbar to see these settings for the room you are in.

Setting Up a Chat Account

Go to Tools > Mail and chat accounts > Add > Chat to set up your first chat account.

Type in your real name and e-mail address if you want your name to be visible to other users.
Select a suitable nickname to use when chatting. If you log on to a network where your selected nickname is in use, you will be asked for an alternative nickname.
Select an IRC network from the drop-down list, or type in the name of an IRC server.
You should now be presented with a dialog containing a list of available rooms for you to join. Select from the list, or click "New" to type in the name of the room yourself. Entering a non-existant chat room creates a brand new room.

Tip: There are multiple chat rooms for you to join on the OperaNet network.

The Chat Panel

The "Chat" panel will display all rooms you have previously visited for quick and easy access. Rooms are grouped by server. Passwords for password-protected chat rooms are remembered after the first visit.

The chat client is integrated with the contacts manager. This panel will therefore also keep track of any on-line contacts that have a chat nickname added to their contact properties. The easiest way to add a nickname to an existing contact, is by using the right-click menu in a chat room user list.

In addition to displaying the nickname of on-line contacts, their status will also be displayed as a small icon if they have set it to anything other than "On line" (for example "Out to lunch" or "On the phone"). You change your own on-line status by using the Chat menu.

Chatting

Once you have joined a chat room, you will normally see a page containing the room's conversation, and a list to the right containing the nicknames of users present in the channel.

Chatting in rooms

If someone has set a topic for the room, this will be displayed at the very top of the chat page.

Talking to others in the room is simple. Just type what you would like to say in the edit field at the bottom of the page, and hit Enter. To grab the attention of a particular user, enter that person's nickname at the beginning of your line. Typing the first few letters and pressing Tab will auto-complete the nickname. Starting with the nickname will make the line highlighted on the other user's screen in most IRC clients, including Opera's.

You may notice that some of the names in the list of users are bolded. These users are operators; users with special permissions regarding administration of the chat room and granting permissions to other users. If you have started your own chat room, you are automatically made the operator of that room.

Note: Creating a chat room on the fly is simple and also temporary. Unless there is a so-called bot present in a room (often visible in the user list simply as X), it does not exist when no users are present, no one will be able to guard the room as 'theirs'.

In addition to "just" talking, you may perform IRC actions. By typing "/me" followed by an action description, normally in the third person, your action will be displayed in purple in the chat room.

Widgets

The widgets panel allows you to group widgets into folders, as well as opening and deleting them. To access the full Widgets window, go to Widgets > Manage widgets.

Windows

The Windows panel lists the currently open pages. You can rearrange them, move the pages outside Opera, close them and much more. This panel is hidden by default and will appear only after you enable it using Tools > Appearance > Panels.

Notes

Speed up researching with the notes feature. Jot down a note in conjunction with a Web page, drag the note (or right-click and paste) to an e-mail message, Web form field, or chat conversation to share it with others, or simply store your notes for future reference. When notes get plentiful, you can arrange them in folders.

Search

Opera comes with a selection of built-in searches. Access them in a single search field in the "Search" panel.

Adding Web pages as panels

To show a Web page in the panels, press Ctrl+D to bookmark it, and then select to show it as a panel. Some Web pages provide special links (rel="sidebar") to add Web pages as panels. Note that pressing the "View" button in the panel and selecting "Small-Screen Rendering" will force most Web pages into more panel-friendly formats.

Tip: Right-click the Web page area in the panel for multiple choices.

Contacts

This panel lists your contacts. This panel is hidden by default and will appear only after you have created at least one e-mail, news, or chat account. Type in the name of the contact in the "Quick find" field, and Opera will start matching your search entry as you type. Click on the name of a contact to to view all your e-mail correspondence with that contact. Right-click on the contact and select "Properties" to view or change details, such as name, e-mail address, chat nickname, home page, notes or even an image of that contact.

History

The History panel lists the Web pages you have visited lately. Forgot the URL to that page you saw yesterday? Just go here and look or search for it; the "Quick find" feature makes searches highly efficient. Click on any of the pages in the history to go to them. You can change how many pages (if any) you want Opera to remember, by going to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > History. If you want to delete addresses from the History list, just select them and press Delete.

Note that you can access the full History window, which has times and dates for the pages as well, by pressing Ctrl+Alt+H or by going to Tools > History.

Transfers

When you download a file, it will appear in the Transfers panel. You can select the file you are downloading there, and choose to stop, resume or retransfer the download. At the bottom part of the panel, you can see information about the download speed, size of the file, and where you are downloading from.

To access the full Transfers page, press Ctrl+Alt+T or go to Tools > Transfers.

Links

The Links panel displays all the links in your current page. To go to any of the links in that page, click on the links in the panel (or of course click on the link in the page itself). Use the "Quick find" feature to quickly locate particular links or linked file types from the document. If you click on the "Lock" button, the Links panel will keep the links currently in the panel even if you go to another page. Click "Lock" again to change this.

To access the links listing as a page, press Ctrl+Alt+L or go to Tools > Links.

The panels, toggled by pressing F4, are available as buttons on the panel selector, by default placed on the left of Opera's screen space. You can add and remove panels of your own (see below), and choose which ones to present in the panel selector. Panel and panel selector placement can also be changed by right-clicking them.

Some of the panels are hidden by default, and will appear when you enable certain features. For example, the chat panel will only appear after you have created at least one chat account. Other panels may not be visible by default, but you can enable them using Tools > Appearance > Panels.

Bookmarks

"Bookmarks" is a list of shortcuts to Web pages you wish to return to, and the bookmark panel is where you access, add, remove, edit, and sort your bookmarks in Opera. (Note: You can also go to the Bookmark menu and choose "Manage bookmarks" there, to get a larger view for editing.) Here are some of the things you can do:

Import

You can also import your bookmarks or favorites from other browsers. To do this, go to the File menu and select Import and export, and then which program you want to import from. Note that it might be a good idea to create a folder in the Opera Bookmarks first, and put all your imported bookmarks into one folder.

Mail

This panel is hidden by default and will appear only after you have created at least one e-mail or news account.

Ask your ISP for the specific server names or IP addresses to enter into the incoming and outgoing mail servers. If your ISP uses a non-standard server port (default ports are 143 for IMAP, 110 for POP, and 119 for NNTP), you can enter it after the server name in the form "servername:port", i.e. "pop.example.com:111".

The "Leave messages on server" setting is enabled by default for POP users. This setting tells Opera Mail to leave all received e-mail on the mail server, so it's accessible from other computers. Most POP users will want this setting disabled if they'll only be accessing their e-mail via Opera Mail.

Once you have created an e-mail or newsgroup account, the Mail menu and Mail panel should appear. You can use these to access your accounts.

Security

TLS and SSL (the precursor to TLS) enable encrypted communications between a mail client and server. Encrypted communications allow your password and other sensitive data to be sent across the Internet without others being able to spy on it. Opera Mail supports both TLS and SSL. The server must support e-mail encryption for you to use this feature.

If you want to use TLS encryption, enable the "Secure connection" setting. If you want to use SSL encryption, enable the "Secure connection" setting and add the necessary port (port 993 for secure IMAP and port 995 for secure POP) in the "Incoming server" input as described above. These settings can also be adjusted on the "Servers" tab in account settings once your account has been created.

Zoom and Other Display Modes

There are several options to increase readability of Web pages in opera.

Zoom

If a Web site has really small fonts, and you want to make them bigger, zoom in or out by pressing the + and -, or 0 and 9 buttons. Open Tools > Preferences > Web pages to set the default page zoom for new pages.

Full-screen mode

If your screen is small, or you want to display a website with the minimum of clutter, type F11 to maximize the browser window. Now the toolbars are hidden, and the document window occupies all the available space. Press F11 again to return to normal viewing mode.

Fit-to-width mode

If a Web page forces you to scroll left-right to read all of its content, you can eliminate the need for scrolling by pressing Ctrl-F11. Pressing Ctrl-F11 one more time returns you to normal mode.

Importing bookmarks from other programmes

To import bookmarks to Opera from other programs, go to File > Import and export and choose the program you want to import your bookmarks from. Now browse your way to the folder in which your bookmarks are located, and confirm to import.

Note-

You might want to create or set an active folder in your Panel (F4) which your bookmarks will be imported to.

In addition to importing bookmarks, it is possible to merge the bookmarks you already have by using an external bookmark manager.

A highly recommended bookmark managing program is "Powermarks" from Kaylon Technologies. Powermarks recognizes Opera, as well as Netscape Navigator's bookmarks and Internet Explorer's Favorites.

Exporting bookmarks

Some browsers, such as Firefox, can detect the presence of Opera on your computer. Therefore, it is often easier to just use the browser's bookmark import mechanism and import the bookmarks directly.

If you need to use your Opera bookmarks on a browser on another computer, you may want to export the bookmarks to an HTML file. Many browsers can understand bookmarks in this format, even if they don't understand Opera's internal bookmark format.

To export bookmarks from Opera, follow these steps:

1. Go to File > Import and export > Export bookmarks as HTML

2. Choose the file name, and click Save

3. Import the bookmark file according to the instructions of your other browser. On Internet Explorer, you find this under File > Export and import. In Firefox, go to Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks, and from the Bookmarks Manager choose File > Import.

Managing bookmarks in the Bookmarks window

In addition to the Bookmarks panel, you can also arrange your bookmarks in the Bookmarks window.

To open the Bookmarks window, go to Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.

The Bookmarks window works in much the same way as the Bookmarks panel, except that the former has a few additional choices, such as the File menu. From the File menu, you can import and export, and save the parts of the bookmarks list that you select.

By choosing File > Open you can also choose another file to use as your main bookmark file.

Managing Bookmarks in the Panel

To sort and edit your bookmarks, press F4 to toggle the Panel and select the "Bookmarks" button at the top. The bookmark panel shows the bookmark in the order that they appear in the Bookmarks menu. You can sort the bookmarks by clicking the View button.

The first option is for choosing how you want your Bookmarks window to look like:

* Full view - Displays the whole window as one, showing both folders and bookmarks

* Split vew - Splits the window into two parts, the top one for the super-folders, the bottom one for sub-folders and bookmarks

* Single folder - Displays folders in one window. Will not show bookmarks.

The options for sorting bookmarks are:

* Sort by my order - Bookmarks sorted by user-defined order. You can arrange the bookmarks in any order you want by clicking and dragging them.

* Sort by name - Bookmarks sorted alphabetically by name

* Sort by nick - Bookmarks sorted alphabetically by nickname

* Sort by address - Bookmarks sorted by URL

* Sort by description - Bookmarks sorted by the description (you can see the description of a bookmark when you edit it, or if you hover the mouse pointer over it for a short while)

* Sort by created - Bookmarks sorted with the last created bookmark first

* Sort by visited - Bookmarks sorted with the last visited bookmark first

The two last options in the View menu are for the order of the bookmarks.

* Sort ascending - Sorts bookmarks from top to bottom, that is, A - Z, 0 - 9

* Sort descending - Sorts bookmarks from bottom to top, that is, Z - A, 9 - 0

The Add button (or pressing Ctrl+D) will add the active page to bookmarks. If you click and drag the Add button, a menu will drop down, from which you can add a new folder or a separator. When you add a new folder, it will appear as a subfolder of the currently selected one. To add a folder in the top level, just click in the empty area below the bookmarks, (or use Ctrl+Click to unselect the selected folder), and then you can add a new one at the same level.

Right-clicking a bookmark or a folder will also display the menus for the buttons, and Properties will allow you to change a bookmarks name, nickname, URL and more.

Turning images, video, and sound on/off

Select Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content to customize multimedia in Opera. Images, video, and sound can be enabled or disabled separately. Turning multimedia sound on/off will not affect system or event sounds.

Enable event sounds

If you would like to associate sounds to different events while using Opera, you can do so using Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Notifications. From the list of events, select the one for which you would like Opera to play a sound. Click the Choose... button and browse until you find the desired sound file. Repeat this for each event, and click OK.

Turning event sounds on/off will not affect system or multimedia sounds.

Filling out forms

It is often necessary to fill out forms on the Web, and most forms ask for the same information. Save this information once in Opera and it can easily be pasted into any Web form. Opera will even offer to automatically complete it.

User interface

Opera is available in many languages. Depending on the version of Opera you are using, you may have multiple languages pre-installed, or you may have only a single language. In either case, additional languages may be installed by downloading the appropriate language files.

To activate your language, select it from the menu under Tools > Preferences > General > Language. Once you press OK, the user interface should immediately change to the language of your choice, if the appropriate language file is included on your system.

If the language file of your choice is not pre-installed, you can install it manually. To see if Opera is available in your language, see the language files list, read the instructions, and download the appropriate file. Note that some localized versions have English help files.

Auto-scrolling using the mouse wheel

Click the scroll wheel once and see change to a large "dot" with arrows. Now, you can move the mouse up, down, left and right, and the page will automatically scroll. The speed depends on how far up or down you move the cursor.

This way, you can for example leave the mouse and let the lines scroll slowly by while you sit back, relax, and read the text.

Searching with Opera

You can use the search field to do a web search from within the browser. You no longer have to visit the search-engine's Web site prior to placing a search. This saves time, thus making your browsing more effective.For instance, if you need information on a Lamborghini, type Lamborghini in the search field and press return. If you want to switch to another search engine, you can select one from the drop-down.

It is also possible to start the search from the address field. For instance, to search with Google, you can type g Lamborghini in the address bar.
You can also add new search engines to Opera's list. The easiest way is to browse to the search engine's web site, right click in its search field, and select "Create search". If you want to be able to search with keywords from the address bar, such as g for Google in the example above, you need to enter something in the "Keyword" field.

Opera Mail

Opera Mail is different from most other e-mail clients. It organizes your messages for you, and it has an indexing engine which allows for lightning-fast searches, making it easy to retrieve old messages. When you get used to working with Opera Mail, you will ideally find yourself with more time to read and reply to your messages, because you spend less of your time organizing them.

Setting Up an Account and Importing Messages

To begin, you will need to set up a new account or import account settings from another application. Go to Tools > Mail and chat accounts. If you have not yet created any accounts, you will be prompted to create an account now. If you have already created an account, click the Add button. Select which kind of account. Ask your ISP for the specific server names or IP addresses to enter into the incoming and outgoing mail servers. If your ISP uses a non-standard server port (default ports are 143 for IMAP, 110 for POP, and 119 for NNTP), you can enter it after the server name in the form "servername:port", i.e. "pop.example.com:111". you would like to create.

The "Leave messages on server" setting is enabled by default for POP users. This setting tells Opera Mail to leave all received e-mail on the mail server, so it's accessible from other computers. Most POP(Post office protocol) users will want this setting disabled if they'll only be accessing their e-mail via Opera Mail.

Once you have created an e-mail or newsgroup account, the Mail menu and Mail panel should appear. You can use these to access your accounts.

Useful Account Settings

From the Tools > Mail and chat accounts dialog, you can create, delete, and edit your mail and news accounts. To edit account details, select an account and click "Edit". Important account settings are described below.

Account category

On the "General" tab, you can add a custom account category to be used with the account selector. Type a new category name or choose an existing category from the drop-down. You can then restrict visible messages to specific categories using the context menu in the Mail panel or from Mail > Show account.

Security password

You can set a security password to control access to your mailboxes. Go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Security, set a master password with at least one numeric and one alphabetic character. Tick "Use as master password for e-mail and Wand". You can set the frequency of a system password prompt using the "Ask for password" setting.

Important: Be sure to remember your master password, because you cannot retrieve it.

Opera Web Mail Premium

Users of the fee-based Opera Web Mail Premium service can access their Opera Web Mail account using POP. Opera Mail will automatically fill out much of your account information when you choose to setup an Opera Web Mail account. Your "Login name" should appear as follows: "username:operamail.com#operamail.com", where "username" is your Opera Web Mail account ID. For your reference, the incoming server is "pop3.operamail.com" and the outgoing server is "smtpx.operamail.com".

Message import

It is possible to import e-mail from earlier versions (before 7.x) of Opera, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Mail (only version 6 and 7, and related email clients such as the Mozilla suite), Thunderbird, or any mailbox stored in the generic mbox format (usually *.mbx or *.mbs files), including older versions of Netscape. You can import different accounts settings, folders, and contacts. Your imported account's folder structure will be displayed under "Filters", and the imported messages will be available in "Received". Filters cannot be imported.

Select File > Import and export > Import mail to import. If your previous mailer is not listed above, see if it includes the capability to export to the mbox format.
